Answers to frequently asked questions
about Senior Care Options

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Commonwealth Care Alliance (CCA) Senior Care Options.

  • What is Senior Care Options?

Senior Care Options (SCO) is a healthcare program for people over age 65 who have both Medicare and MassHealth Standard or just MassHealth Standard. When you sign up for SCO, you get so much more with your MassHealth Standard coverage at no additional cost.

When you enroll, you’ll have a team of health professionals all working with you to help you stay healthy, independent, and living in your home. Your team will include primary care provider, nurses, specialists, and a geriatric support coordinator. You’ll be able to receive care in your providers' offices, in your home, or wherever works best for you.

  • What are the benefits?

With Senior Care Options, you get all the services you receive today through your MassHealth Standard coverage, and more. This includes primary and specialty medical care, preventive care, emergency care, X-rays and lab tests, medical supplies and equipment, prescription drugs, and more at no cost to you.

  • Is there prescription drug coverage?

Yes. All of your prescription drugs are covered at no cost to you, and you also can receive your needed over-the-counter drugs and health care supplies free of charge. • Will CCA work with my family members to help manage my benefits and care?

When you enroll in CCA’s Senior Care Options program, members of your family can become part of your care team. That means that they will work with CCA in managing all aspects of your benefits and care.

In addition, our plan provides helpful services to your family caregivers to help them cope with any stress or strain they may feel, while providing educational, social, and resource supports.

  • How do I join?

If you are interested in our Senior Care Options Program and think you or a family member may qualify, please call our Member Services team at 866-610-2273 (TTY 711). We are available 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., 7 days a week or fill out this quick form and one of our representatives will call you at your convenience.

  • Do I need to change my doctors?

Commonwealth Care Alliance has a large network of quality primary care providers and specialists, so there’s a good chance your current doctors and other providers are in our network and you won’t have to make a change. However, if you do need to find a new doctor  or other provider, our Member Services team will be happy to help.

To see if your providers are in the Commonwealth Care Alliance network, search the Senior Care Options Program Online Provider Directory.

  • What if I want to change my primary care provider?

You may change your primary care provider for any reason, at any time, and choose another participating provider from the CCA network. For more information, please call our Member Services team at 866-610-2273 (TTY 711).

  • When can I enroll in Senior Care Options?

Enrollment is voluntary, and you can enroll any time by calling our Member Services team at 866-610-2273 (TTY 711).

  • What if I join the program and am not happy?

Most members are very happy with their Senior Care Options experience, and very few leave the program. Still, you can disenroll at any time if you are not satisfied. Your disenrollment will be effective on the last day of the month in which you let us know you want to leave the program.

  • If I enroll, what happens to my MassHealth and Medicare? Will I lose them?

No - you don’t lose them. MassHealth and Medicare are working together with Senior Care Options plans to better integrate services they both offer and to offer you more flexible and additional benefits. This means that the services you need will be better coordinated.

And, if you decide that you want to go back to what you have now, you will have the right to do so at any time. So, you can keep your MassHealth and Medicare cards in case you decide to disenroll. If that happens, you will just go back to using your Medicare and MassHealth cards.
