Dr. Nazlim Hagmann, Acting Chief Medical Officer for CCA Health Michigan, appeared on Western Mass News to discuss recognizing symptoms of mental health issues, including depression. In addition to sadness and lack of interest in activities, depression may come with physical symptoms, such as headaches and appetite changes.

“Sometimes paying attention to physical symptoms that are not your usual self may be important to detecting depression” she said.

Opening up to family and friends is a good first step to seeking help with anxiety and depression, Dr. Hagmann said. Looking for a therapist online can be a good way to connect with a professional.

“When people are anxious and depressed, they usually isolate themselves. Being a part of [community] activities helps break down this isolation,” she said.
