CCA Senior Care Options rated among the top 16 percent of MAPD health plans nationally
BOSTON, MA – October 13, 2021 – Commonwealth Care Alliance® (CCA), an integrated care system serving nearly 42,000 individuals that has earned national recognition for its proven expertise in complex care coordination and delivery, today announced the CCA Senior Care Options (SCO) plan has been awarded 5 stars—the highest rating—in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) annual Star Quality Ratings for 2022.
CCA Senior Care Options (SCO) is an HMO Special Needs plan for individuals aged 65 and older who are eligible for Medicaid. These dually eligible Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries qualify as high-need based on income or health status, and often live with multiple chronic conditions, physical or behavioral health disabilities, severe mental illness, social risk factors or unmet social needs, including food and housing insecurity. CCA SCO, one of the fastest growing plans of its kind, serves 12,800 members as of August 1, 2021.
“This recognition by CMS, reflecting the high-quality care and service received by our members, is the direct result of the incredible dedication and effort of everyone at CCA to fulfill our mission of improving the health and well-being of people with significant needs,” said Christopher D. Palmieri, President and CEO of Commonwealth Care Alliance. “As we celebrate this milestone, we are thrilled to be expanding our care model both within and outside of Massachusetts to offer more choices for individuals who have traditionally been provided extremely limited healthcare options.”
CMS’ quality ratings system is designed to help consumers, their families, and caregivers easily compare the quality of the plans available to them. CMS rated 471 MAPD plans this year. Plans are rated from a low of one to a high of five stars, based on plan performance on about forty quality measures. CCA SCO’s 5-star rating was the highest received by any of the 17 Massachusetts MAPD plans that were evaluated by CMS. Ratings are based on care and service quality measures across five categories, including preventive care, managing chronic conditions, member satisfaction, customer service, and pharmacy services.
In addition to CCA SCO, Commonwealth Care Alliance® currently offers CCA One Care, a Massachusetts demonstration Medicare-Medicaid Plan (MMP) for individuals between 21 and 64 who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid. CCA One Care, the largest plan of its kind in Massachusetts and fastest growing plan of its kind in the country, has earned a top rating in a consumer survey conducted by the CMS, scoring 93% in 2020, for five consecutive years. Massachusetts residents can sign up for CCA SCO during the upcoming Medicare open enrollment period beginning on October 15.
To complement its existing Massachusetts product offerings, CCA is also adding two new Medicare Advantage plans to the market, designed for people with significant needs but who narrowly miss Medicaid income or asset thresholds. CCA is also expanding beyond Massachusetts for the first time, offering Medicare Advantage plans in Rhode Island. These new plans will be designed to meet the needs of individuals who often live with chronic conditions and face multiple social or medical needs.
