As part of the City of Boston’s effort to relocate chronically homeless individuals from the encampment at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard (Mass and Cass), CCA was approached by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to create a first-of-its-kind temporary housing community on the former Shattuck Hospital campus in Jamaica Plain.

As the first integrated plan in Massachusetts to offer COVID-19 vaccines to patients at home, this CCA program has been favorably compared with similar pilot programs in Washington State, New York, and California. It also ensured that CCA had a seat at the table for national discussions around reaching at-risk populations with these much-needed vaccinations. In March of 2021, CCA was invited to join AHIP in briefing the White House and bringing attention to COVID-19 vaccine delivery efforts and best practices for delivering care to homebound individuals.

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, CCA was contacted by the Massachusetts COVID-19 Command Center to assist the Commonwealth in managing its COVID-positive, marginally-housed population. We collaborated with state regulators to create—and then manage—a program to temporarily house these individuals in six hotel sites across the state that were transformed into COVID-19 Isolation & Recovery Centers.

NEJM Catalyst Highlights CCA’s Efforts to Fight Housing Insecurity. Homelessness can lead to poor health, especially among older adults. To help members who are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity gain permanent housing, CCA has partnered with Hearth, a community-based housing organization. CCA provides integrated health and social services, including on-site medical care, and Hearth offers housing resources, knowledge of home safety, and supportive services. More than 300 CCA members have been housed in Hearth facilities since the partnership began in 2004.
