It’s time to recommend and administer the influenza vaccine to all eligible patients for the 2025-2026 flu season. For patients age 65 and older, prioritize the high-dose influenza vaccine for strong protection.
Why Prevention Matters
Most CCA members have chronic health conditions that put them at higher risk of serious complications, hospitalizations, and death from the flu. Annual vaccination is an effective measure to protect them.
Your Role: Influence and Encourage
Your strong recommendation makes the biggest difference. Many patients trust their provider’s guidance the most, especially if they are undecided or hesitant about vaccination.
Best Practices for Talking about Flu Vaccine Hesitancy:
- Start with a strong recommendation: Use clear, assertive language (e.g., “You’re due for your flu vaccine. We’ll do that at the end of your visit.”), which is more effective than phrasing it as an optional question.
- Use open-ended questions: If a patient declines, ask, “Can you tell me more about your concerns?” Listen and address specific worries or misinformation.
- Apply motivational interviewing: Explore and resolve barriers together – such as misconceptions, lack of transportation, or scheduling obstacles.
- Offer convenient access: Use standing orders, on-site vaccination, or flexible scheduling when possible, to reduce missed opportunities. Ask patients if you can follow-up at an agreed-upon time to continue to encourage vaccination or to confirm they were able to obtain the vaccine.
How CCA Supports You
- Monthly care gap reports: Track your patients’ vaccination statuses and identify those who still need the flu vaccine.
- Provider tip sheet: Access practical advice for communicating about the flu vaccine in our online tip sheet: Influenza Vaccination Provider Tip Sheet.
