Virtual care questions

Below are common questions about video visits.

A video visit means you’re meeting with a care provider face-to-face, but over a video call, instead of in person. Through a video visit, we provide “virtual care.” This is sometimes also called telehealth, telemedicine, or remote care.

You will connect with your healthcare provider over video using a smartphone, laptop, or tablet. You can expect the same great care you receive in person. A lot of our services can be done over video because we can still see and hear you. Together, we can discuss how you’re feeling, review your medications, see what services and equipment you may need, and more.

Yes, just like a regular visit with your healthcare team, your video visit is private and confidential. We follow government privacy rules. Video visits are never recorded or shared. It’s important that you conduct the visit in a private, secure location too.

Of course! You and your care team build a care plan that’s personalized to your needs and goals.

You will need a device with a working camera and microphone for your video visit. Most smartphones, tablets, and computers work. With the right device and a reliable Internet connection, you can connect with your healthcare team online.

This might be new for you. We want to help make it easy. The Virtual Care Support team can walk you through the process, step by step. Call 617-960-0380 (TTY 711), 8 am to 6 pm, Monday to Friday. You don’t need to have a visit scheduled to test your device. We can help you at any time!

Please contact your care partner to see if any of your upcoming visits can be done virtually. Some of the many types of visits we offer virtually include:

  • Annual wellness checks
  • Routine visits
  • Urgent care, including evaluation of possible COVID-19 infection
  • Counseling and behavioral health support
  • Diabetes management
  • Palliative care
  • Consultations with specialty providers, such as physical therapy and occupational therapy for equipment needs

Yes, you can invite a caregiver, spouse, partner, child, parent, and others to join your video visit, even if they are not in the same location as you. Please let us know that you would like someone to join at the start of your visit. We can send them a secure link to join.

Yes, we can add an interpreter to your video visit for almost any language, including ASL. If we don’t have an interpreter available in your preferred language, we can offer other language assistance services to meet your needs.

Video visits typically do not cost more than an in-person appointment.
