Staying active is important at any age and ability level and can be beneficial for both your physical and mental health. Just one session of moderate physical activity can help you sleep better, lessen anxiety, and lower your blood pressure. Over time, consistent exercise can improve your bone health, reduce your risk of heart disease and certain cancers, and can even promote brain health and help you live longer.

Now that it’s summer, the warmer weather also creates great opportunities to get moving. Even activities like gardening, strolling around the farmers market or local park, or volunteering in your community can help engage your body and mind.

For CCA member Debora*, giving back to the community and being active are part of who she is. As a former nurse, she has always felt strongly about caring for others, and she now volunteers at a local nursing home as a way to stay involved—and active.

When Debora became a CCA member, she noted to her care team that she felt tired after her volunteer shifts and had trouble being on her feet all day. Understanding how important volunteering was to Debora, her CCA team created a personalized care plan so she could feel her best.

Part of Debora’s care plan involved helping her access resources in her community that supported her active lifestyle. This included nutrition tips and access to healthy foods to fuel her body, along with education on how to maintain good habits. Her care team also discussed the importance of regular checkups, helping her schedule appointments to address ongoing health concerns. With CCA’s support, Debora was able to stay on track with both her health and volunteering goals.

CCA’s interdisciplinary care teams understand that not everyone’s path to wellness looks the same. We also know that a person’s physical health, mental health, and life circumstances can all influence how they feel. By living and working in the communities we serve, we can identify each person’s unique needs and develop a plan that helps them reach their goals. We also work closely with other local organizations that share our mission and provide a spectrum of health and social supports.

“As you age, it becomes even more important to focus on your health and well-being,” said Kelli Barrieau, Vice President of Clinical Services at CCA. “Everyone has a different goal, whether that be choosing the right foods for healthy meals at home, building the stamina to chase grandkids around the park, or anything in between. At CCA, we strive to help our members stay well and thrive in the communities they call home. That’s why our care teams are staffed with health experts dedicated to supporting our members through all stages of life.”

Regardless of your ability level, movement and exercise are key to maintaining your health and longevity. This doesn’t have to mean intense workouts or rigorous routines – it’s about finding what works for you and your lifestyle. At CCA, our care teams are here to support our members, offering personalized guidance and encouragement to help them stay strong, independent, and engaged, one step at a time.
