If your drug is not on the List of Covered Drugs, first call Member Services and make sure it is not covered. If your drug is not covered, you have two options:

  1. Ask Member Services for a list of similar covered drugs. Show the list to your doctor. Ask if one of the covered drugs will work for you.
  2. Ask for an exception to cover your drug. Click here to learn how to file a pharmacy appeal.

In some cases, we can offer a temporary supply. This can give you time to talk with your doctor about what to do.

Rules for temporary supplies vary based on your member status. Call Member Services to see if you qualify.

Visit our Pharmacy Information page to learn more about your pharmacy benefits.

As a new or current member, you may take drugs that are not on our drug list. You may also take a drug on our list that has coverage limits. For example, you may need prior authorization before filling a prescription.

Talk with your doctor about whether a covered drug may work for you. You can also ask for an exception so we can cover the drug you are already taking.

While you review your options with your doctor, we may cover your drug during your first 90 days as a member.

For each drug that is not on our drug list or has coverage limits, we will cover a temporary 31-day supply. If your prescription is written for fewer than 31 days, we will allow refills until you have up to a 31-day supply.

After the first 31-day supply, we will not cover these drugs. This applies even if you have been a member for less than 90 days.

If you live in a long-term care facility and are past your first 90 days as a member, we will cover a 31-day emergency supply.

If your level of care changes, we will provide an emergency supply of up to 31 days. This applies to drugs not on our drug list, including drugs needed step therapy or prior authorization.

A change in level of care may include:

  • Moving into a long-term care facility
  • Leaving a long-term care facility
  • Being admitted to a hospital
  • Leaving a hospital
  • A change in skilled nursing facility care

Medicare Part D Exclusion Drug List

Some drugs and drug types are not covered by Medicare Part D. If you have both Medicare Part D and MassHealth (Medicaid), MassHealth (Medicaid) may cover some of these drugs. Some drugs may require prior authorization. See the MassHealth (Medicaid) Drug List for more information.

Most OTC drugs are not covered by Medicare Part D. Insulin and supplies used to inject insulin are exceptions. OTC drugs covered by MassHealth (Medicaid) are listed on the MassHealth (Medicaid) OTC Drug List.

Most prescription vitamins and minerals are not covered by Medicare Part D.

Prenatal vitamins, fluoride products, and some prescription vitamins are exceptions.

Prescription vitamins covered by MassHealth (Medicaid) are listed on the MassHealth (Medicaid) Drug List.

Some drugs used for weight gain may not be covered by Medicare Part D. This includes dronabinol, megestrol, and somatropin. MassHealth may cover these drugs if Medicare Part D denies coverage. See the MassHealth (Medicaid) Drug List for prior authorization requirements.

Coverage under Medicare Part B has not changed. Products covered by Medicare Part B before January 1, 2006, are still covered under Part B. Part B prior authorization criteria are based on Medicare and state Medicaid requirements.

This page lists the non-drug products covered by MassHealth (Medicaid) through the Pharmacy Online Processing System (POPS). Products that require prior authorization are marked with “PA.” Payment is based on Executive Office of Health and Human Service’s regulations at 114.3 CMR 22.00: Durable Medical Equipment and 101 CMR 317.00: Medicine.
