CCA Health California clinical operations director Kristen Slater appeared on Your California Life to talk about the prevalence of behavioral health conditions among adults over the age of 65. It is a common misconception that depression is a normal part of aging, she said.

A common sign of depression is lack of interest in activities that one typically enjoys, Slater said. Physical signs of depression can also include changes in weight and sleep.

Slater suggested accessing support by staying in touch with loved ones, getting involved at community centers, and seeking out a therapist if needed.

“If you’re not ready to talk to a therapist, seeking out a peer group who might be going through the same thing can be really helpful,” she said.
