Dr. Helwig joins CCA with 25 years of experience guiding healthcare organizations through growth and transformation to support quality outcomes

BOSTON, MA – August 7, 2023 – Commonwealth Care Alliance® (CCA), a mission-driven healthcare services organization offering health plans and care delivery programs designed for individuals with significant needs, welcomes Dr. Amy Helwig, MD, MS, FAAP, CPE as its new Chief Quality Officer. Dr. Helwig joins CCA’s clinical leadership team after serving as Executive Vice President of Commercial Health at RTI Health Advance, RTI International, where she advised health plans and health systems with transformation solutions for clinical models, care management and digital health applications, and population health strategies.

As Chief Quality Officer, Dr. Helwig now spearheads CCA’s clinical quality functions, monitoring all health plan performance outcomes while identifying ways to continuously improve and innovate how the organization cares for members.  She is focused on developing an enterprise-wide population health improvement strategy and championing the development and sustainability of a culture of quality, safety, and high reliability.

During her time at RTI Health Advance, RTI International, Dr. Helwig led the expansion and creation of a new advisory services unit providing strategic expertise in health outcomes optimization and value-based care strategy to health plans and providers. Before RTI, she served as Chief Quality Officer and Vice President of Quality Improvement and Performance for the Insurance Services Division at UPMC Health Plan where she led health plan quality operations and strategy for new clinical care models, population health, alternative payment programs and regulatory compliance. Prior to UPMC, Dr. Helwig held several positions with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services between 2006 and 2016, including Chief Medical Officer for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, and Deputy Director of the Center for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety under the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Dr. Helwig received her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and her M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin.
