A WGBH radio reporter visited the former Shattuck Hospital campus to speak with residents and staff of the innovative cottage community developed onsite. Once residents of an encampment at Boston’s Mass and Cass intersection, these individuals now live in a small community of cottages at the site, where they also receive substance use disorder treatment and other behavioral health services. Commonwealth Care Alliance manages this first-of-its-kind community, which was built in partnership with the City of Boston and Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
To date, more than 50 people have been placed into permanent housing through this transitional program.
